Poison Control
Yesterday I had an e-mail I had to write so I left the kids for, at most, 1 minute while I went in the computer room. When I came out, I immediately smelled fingernail polish. Uh-oh... needless to say, the smell of fingernail polish and unattended toddlers are not a good combination. I walked around the corner to discover both of my children sitting under the kitchen table and Carter is "painting" the floor. (Thankfully it was clear fingernail polish.) Next, I noticed that Kendall's eyes were watering. I picked her up and smelled her lips only to discover that her mouth did indeed smell like fingernail polish. My 2 1/2 year old was feeding my 1 year old fingernail polish! I quickly called poison control and reached a very helpful pharmacist named Gilbert. Gilbert, much to my surprise, instructed me to TASTE the fingernail polish! What?!?! Yeah, I heard him right... I had to taste the polish. Let me tell you, it was awful! He asked what it tasted like, and I told him it was very bitter. To which he responded, "Great!" It turns out that the companies that make fingernail polish include a chemical in the polish that makes it very bitter in order to discourage kids from eating it. Gilbert said that with that awful taste there was no way that my kids could have eaten enough to harm themselves. He gave me a few signs to watch for, just in case, and then told me he would call back later to check on Kendall. Thankfully, Kendall does not appear to have any adverse side effects from her little "snack."
